Tekizai, Son of Heaven

Tekizai, Son of Heaven is a ballad (a narrative poem) which explores themes of fate, suffering, and divine providence. Set in the early Edo period of 17th century Japan, Tekizai tells the story of a fisherman from northern Kyoto whose past is marked by terrible suffering. As Tekizai tries to overcome the painful shadows of his past, a kind of cosmic battle plays out- one in which the power of the Christian God is pitted against that of eastern philosophies and superstitions. Are Tekizai's scars the result of an inescapable destiny? Is the will of Heaven indifferent to the grief and distress of man? Can fate be changed? Tekizai must face these questions and more if he is to have any healing for the scars which have so marked his body and soul. This paperback edition is beautifully illustrated with classical Japanese artwork, colored and stylized to fit the style and story of Tekizai.
