The Edge of the Everlasting Mind

Joe Batarse's debut novel is a profound literary exploration of consciousness, mortality, and the fragile beauty of existence. The narrative centers on Zuzu, a man in his fifties grappling with an unnameable dread and a devastating cancer diagnosis. As his health declines, his mind traverses decades, weaving together the stories of his Palestinian father, Yusuf, an artist haunted by loss; Marguerite, a French war widow betrayed by her American husband; and Bernie, a coal miner who reinvents himself on the Venice Beach boardwalk. Intertwined with these threads is Prieto, an ex-gang member seeking redemption. Spanning from the 1940s to the 2000s, the novel rejects easy answers, questioning faith, memory, and the illusion of the self. With dense, lyrical prose and deep philosophical rigor, it asks: What does it mean to be alive? The result is a poignant meditation on love, betrayal, and the final act of drawing breath.
