Reading Order
A reading order is the sequence in which the volumes or issues of a comic series should be read, which for long-running and relaunched series is not always the order of the numbers on the spines.
In depth
For most manga the reading order is simple: volume 1, 2, 3 and onward. For American comics it can be complicated. Series are relaunched with a new issue #1, collected editions are renumbered, and big crossover events run through several titles at once, so the right next book may have a different title on the spine.
How to find it
Check which issues each collected edition contains — the range is printed on the back or the copyright page — and read collections in order of those issues. For a crossover event, read the core event series and add tie-ins only if you want them.
Spin-offs and side stories
Prequels, side stories and spin-offs can usually be read after the main series or alongside it; publishers often mark them as such.
Manga and spin-offs
Even manga has occasional reading-order questions: sequels published under a new title, spin-offs set in the same world, and prequels released later. Publishers usually number main series consistently and mark spin-offs separately, so main volumes come first and side stories after.
American relaunches
A superhero title may have been relaunched many times. Collected editions are often branded by writer or by era — a writer's run, a relaunch with its own volume numbers — and the issue numbers inside are the reliable guide to order.
What it means today
Our series pages list volumes in reading order and say which edition collects what, so you can buy the next book without guessing.
