How to choose religious and cultural comics
This section collects comics from religious and cultural traditions. Choose by tradition and by whether you want a retelling or a study.
Find the tradition and its source text
Religious comics retell scripture, lives of religious figures or stories from a tradition. The description names the tradition and the text a book follows.
Some are written for teaching within a community, others for general readers.
Know what kind of book it is
A retelling presents a story as a comic, while a study explains a tradition's history or ideas. The description and the publisher show which.
Retellings may follow a particular translation or interpretation; this is often stated in the description.
Children's and adult editions
Many religious comics are written for children; others are for adult readers. Check the intended age.
For teaching use, look for notes, discussion questions or references.
Before you choose an edition
- I know which tradition and source text the book follows.
- I know whether it is a retelling or a study.
- The intended age suits the reader.
- I have checked for notes or references if I need them.
