How to choose superhero comics

Superhero stories run for decades across many series. Choose a collected run with a clear starting point rather than a random issue.

Start with a self-contained run

Long-running characters have been rebooted and renumbered many times, so there is rarely one true volume one. A run by a single writer, collected from its first issue, is usually the easiest place to begin.

Look for collections whose description names the issues they contain and the creative team. A story described as a crossover or event may assume you have read several other series.

Trade paperback, hardcover and omnibus

A trade paperback collects a few months of issues. A hardcover may collect the same or slightly more. An omnibus collects a long stretch, often several years, in one heavy book.

An omnibus is good value for a run you already know you like; a trade paperback is a cheaper way to try one.

Follow the collection numbers within one run

Within a single run, collections are numbered in reading order. Between runs the numbering usually starts again, which is why the same character can have several books labelled Volume 1.

Check the issue ranges in the description to avoid buying the same issues twice in different formats.

Before you choose an edition

  • The description names the issues and the creative team.
  • I know whether this is a standalone run or part of an event.
  • I have checked the issue range against the books I already own.
  • The format suits whether I am trying the series or collecting it.
