How to choose fantasy comics
Fantasy comics range from single-volume fairy tales to long epics. Decide how much world you want to commit to before you start.
Standalone tale or long epic
Many fantasy comics are long series that build a world over many volumes. Others adapt a myth or fairy tale in one book. The description and the volume number tell you which.
If you are unsure, a standalone or a short finished series lets you judge a creator before committing to a long run.
From all-ages adventure to dark fantasy
Fantasy covers gentle adventures for younger readers and violent, adult dark fantasy. The shelf a book sits on and the publisher's age guidance are more reliable than the art.
Dragons, quests and magic schools are common themes across all of these; check the description for the intended audience.
Original stories and adaptations
Some fantasy comics adapt novels, games or traditional myths. An adaptation may condense or change the source, so the description is the place to check what it follows.
Original comics are written for the form and often use the page in ways a prose adaptation does not.

- I know whether this is a standalone book or part of a series.
- The tone and intended age suit the reader.
- I know whether it adapts a novel, game or myth.
- I have found the first volume if it is a series.
