How to choose comics based on films, TV and games
Tie-in comics continue or expand a film, series or game; adaptations retell one. Check which before you buy.
Stories set in a world you already know
A tie-in tells new stories in the world of a film, series or game. It may fit between events on screen or stand apart, and the description usually says where it sits.
Tie-ins often assume you know the characters; they are best for readers who already follow the original.
The story retold as a comic
An adaptation retells a film, series or game as a comic. It may condense or change events, and is easier for new readers to follow than a tie-in.
Check which part of the original it covers, as long stories are often adapted over several volumes.
Where a book fits
Tie-in lines can be numbered separately from the original, and several publishers may have held the same licence over the years. The description and publication date help place a book.
For a game or series with several entries, check which one a comic is connected to.
Before you choose an edition
- I know whether this is a tie-in or an adaptation.
- I know which film, series or game it is connected to.
- I know where it fits in the original's timeline.
- The intended age suits the reader.
